Akaye Vet Program
Mission
Arcahaie Verte “Akaye Vet” is a reforesting program that teaches the youth of Arcahaie “Akaye” how to protect the environment through the science of agriculture as well as biodiversity conservation. It has been proven that science and the practice of agriculture can improve social and economic conditions, promotes economic growth, and teaches local communities to protect the environment. Our main objective is to empower youth with practical knowledge and skills to improve their livelihoods and become role models for future generations to come.
Vision
Arcahaie Verte “Akaye Vet” will carry out a reforestation and forest preservation project to reduce carbon dioxide emission from the atmosphere, decrease land degradation, control soil erosion and deforestation and improve agricultural output. The impact of this program will increase food production, environmental protection, and rural agricultural development in the Arcahaie “Akaye” region. Arcahaie Verte “Akaye Vet” will serve as a pilot site for education, agricultural development, with the goal scale-up this project in other rural communities of Haiti.
Our Goal
Our goal is to impart income-generating skills to the youth of Arcahaie “Akaye” and empower them to have the knowledge they need to create healthy livelihoods for themselves and their families and community while also restoring the environment and working to mitigate the long-term impacts of deforestation. In the next year Arcahaie Verte “Akaye Vet” is planning to provide educational services to 500 students as well and establish a seed bank of 100,000 different types of plants and fruit trees. We aim to plant 10 million trees over the next 10 years. By increasing the amount of land with permanent tree coverage, we can increase food security, decrease deforestation and land degradation, as well as improve the clean water supply and replenish the soil. In the longer term, the organization also plans to impart knowledge on alternative fuel use for cooking, through the establishment of bio-fuel digesters.
Through the promotion of agriculture through education we can expect the following impacts:
* Increased food security
* Social and economic growth
* Safer drinking water
* Alternative fuel for cooking & heat
* Improved agricultural practices
* Protection for the environment
* Appreciation of the need to harmonize the existence of humanity with nature
